Availability Analysis For Heterogeneous Nucleation In A Uniform Electric Field

Industrial demands for more compact heat exchangers are a motivation to find new technology features. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is introduced as a promising phenomenon for heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. Similar to any new technology, EHD has not been understood completely yet and requires more fundamental studies. In boiling phase change phenomena, nucleation is the dominant mechanism i...

Electric field breakdown in single molecule junctions.

Here we study the stability and rupture of molecular junctions under high voltage bias at the single molecule/single bond level using the scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction technique. We synthesize carbon-, silicon-, and germanium-based molecular wires terminated by aurophilic linker groups and study how the molecular backbone and linker group affect the probability of voltage-i...

Dislocations in the Field Theory of Elastoplasticity *

A (microscopic) static elastoplastic field theory of dislocations with moment stress is considered. The relationship between the moment stress and the Nye tensor is discussed and used for the dislocation Lagrangian. We discuss the stress field of a screw dislocation which is modified in the core region due to the appearance of moment stress.

Breakdown of classical nucleation theory near isostructural phase transitions.

We report simulations of crystal nucleation in binary mixtures of hard spherical colloids with a size ratio of 1:10. The stable crystal phase of this system can be either dense or expanded. We find that, in the vicinity of the solid-solid critical point where the crystallites are highly compressible, small crystal nuclei are less dense than large nuclei. This phenomenon cannot be accounted for ...
